"It’s been (another) difficult year, and we all deserve a Happy Hour." Darcie Rae on the escapist joy of Glitter Martini's latest show

Glitter Martini has become a local institution, presenting high energy circus cabarets on themes as diverse as trash and the seven deadly sins. They’re back to impress with their latest show, Glitter Martini’s Happy Hour, which premieres on Sunday 16 October 2022 as a part of the 2022 Fringe Brisbane Festival. We caught up with the founder of Glitter Martini, Darcie Rae, to find out why you should

What’s the origin story of Glitter Martini?

Glitter Martini was founded in 2018 with a mission to create modern circus that includes in the audience in the fun. That first show was actually at Arcana, so I’m super excited to be back there for the first time since 2019. My first show was very aerial heavy, as that’s my background and what I knew at the time, but over the years I met and collaborated with a variety of incredible circus and physical theatre performers with diverse skill sets.

Tell us about about Glitter Martini’s Happy Hour in 100 words or less.

Glitter Martini’s Happy Hour is your escape from the everyday. Aerial, contortion, bubble burlesque, clowning, and even an entire act dedicated to the humble slinky. It’s been (another) difficult year, and we all deserve a Happy Hour.

Why did you choose 'Happy Hour' for the theme of this show?

I have spent a fair bit of time thinking about capital A “Art” over the last couple of years, and the line between art and entertainment. I’ve landed on joy as being a perfectly acceptable reason for something to exist, and this show is a celebration of that. Also all the acts are themed around happy hour beverages.

Who is your perfect audience member? Who is going to LOVE this event?

If you’re a woo-girl, there’s going to be plenty to cheer for. If you like high energy circus and variety, this how you're going to want to spend your Sunday.

What can audiences expect from your show?

High quality circus acts, shameless foolery, and chances to join in!

Is there anything else we simply MUST know about the show?

Mental health is important but a ticket to this show and a drink at the bar outside is way cheaper than therapy.
