Come and be a part of the steering group of the real rulers of the world

Meet Mark Winstanley, Performer & producer for United Nation of I.D.I.O.T.

Tell us about the show in 100 words or less

Some say it’s the Illuminati, others say it’s the Lizard People, some even suspect that Bill Gates is the one causing all the trouble we are in but you are about to learn that The United Nation of I.D.I.O.T. are the real rulers of the world.  They are the people spinning conspiracy theories  to keep the great unwashed confused whilst addressing the the great issues of our times. They are the guys behind the guy behind the guy who knows the girl behind the guy behind the guy.   This group of wannabee Bond Villains make Dr Evil look like Albert Einstein. Come and be part of their steering group to see what dastardly plans they have in store for you and all the world.  “...witty, irreverent and very silly” on the sofa audience member.

Anywhere Festival takes place anywhere but a theatre. Tell us about your venue. What is it about your space that adds to your audience experience?

This is a truly global show with performers beaming in from 3 continents. I.D.I.O.T HQ will be at the Judith Wright Arts Centre  with the Australian member of the company whilst other members are coming in digitally from across the globe.

What is your creative process like?

We have been rehearsing for the past month online and in a company members front room. BIt by bit the show has been honed to discover character and structure that still allows us a lot of room to play and improvise.  If you are in the audience you will have a lot of fun with this one. In fact we invite the delegates to participate in the show by offering their own nefarious ideas for the cast to play with.

Tell us your origin story. How did your collaboration start?

We met in a sleepy french town known for 2 things; canals and alcoholics. It is also home to one of the funniest theatre schools in the world. During the day we would study how to bring our most stupid selves to the stage and at night we would get drunk and ride naked through the streets. Occasionally someone would be dragged off the bike by a guy called George from Quebec who would try to shove a daffodil up their butt. Watch out for him, he is still known to lurk in the dark around the corners there. Ah happy memories.

Who is your perfect audience member? Who is going to LOVE this event?

This show is witty, irreverent, raucous, silly and lots of fun. So if you like your comedy with a big dose of those things then come and see this. If you like boring serious stuff then definitely stay away. Go see some Chekhov done by a student company from a really good drama school.

You’ll probably fall asleep but at least you can tell your friends that you’re cultured.

Is there anything else we simply MUST know about the show?

Yes. You will never look at pancakes, candles or wombats the same way again.

United Nation of Idiots plays the 2021 Anywhere Festival on 8 May at Elements Collective, Fortitude Valley or online.
