There’s Something About Music | The Little Red Company
They say words make you think, but music makes you feel, a song makes you feel a thought. I don’t remember where I heard this phrase from, but I know every time when I hear a song, it provokes my emotions and memories. This Sunday evening, I had the pleasure of attending There’s Something About Music at Brisbane Festival. It is a production by The Little Red Company created by Adam Brunes and Naomi Price.
There’s Something About Music took me on an 80mins journey to experience the most iconic 90s romantic comedy featured the famous soundtracks including ‘Legally Blonde’, ‘When Harry Meets Sally’, ’10 Things I hate about you’, ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ and more. Perhaps it was the die-hard rom-com fan in me, the show got my blood pumping, pulled my nostalgic heartstrings and made me ‘fall in love’ again. This further enhanced by several punchlines and funny banter, particularly the use of one memorable line from the movie ‘Notting Hill’- “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love (marry) her”.
The minimal nature of the stage served the show well by focusing on some of the movie characters’ costumes, such as the classic 90s fashion Cher’s plaid outfit from ‘Clueless’, and Andie’s yellow dress from ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’.
The production is made of a dream cast of Australian theatre sweethearts: Naomi Price, Marcus Corowa, Irena Lysiuk, and Luke Kennedy. The stage presentation was engaging.
They each brought their own unique flavour to each tune through their strong vocals. The performers showcased their range and impressive top notes, one of my favourites was Luke’s ‘The way you look tonight’. Whilst the entire cast was exceptional, the live band gave a flawless accompaniment throughout, dazzling us with the beauty of keyboards, guitars, bass and drums, that started the show with the 20th Century Fox movie intro tune.
One special element I have to highlight is the audience participation in the show. I was intrigued when we learnt that there would be a wedding in the end, and it was entirely up to the audience to decide which performers would get married by voting via phones. While the final number was playing, the audience was invited to ‘celebrate their wedding’ and dance together as guests like a real wedding party. Of course I accepted the invite to dance along with other enthusiastic audience members. The crowd was clapping and cheering. Speaking like a true rom com style, it was a fun and creative way to build a connection between the performers and the audiences at the intimate South Bank Piazza.
The Little Red Company’s There’s Something About Music is the perfect show for anyone, whether you’re a rom-com lover, a Julia Roberts or Hugh Grant fan, in the mood for something nostalgic, or just want a relaxing time step away from reality and get lost in those catchy songs. I would gladly go see it again and I look forward to see what this talented team does next.
