Five shows by artists with disability that are transcending form and trashing stereotype

Wanna see something fresh? Yeah you do. This year at Anywhere Festival, there are a heap incredible works of art coming to you from artists with disability, and they are going to be hot. These performers are fiercely deconstructing barriers and stereotypes, giving you an all-new look at the mechanisms of stage and form. They are creating stunning works across theatre, dance, magic, and performance art. Put them at the top of your list.

Je Suis Toi (I Am You)

Talking place in Cooroy, this show brings four emerging artists together. Composer and cellist Imogen Ferninando provides original accompaniment to performances from Allycia Staples, Tim Orton and Mitchell Runcie. I haven’t seen the lads yet, but I am familiar with Allycia and she is making a name for herself in a number of prestigious companies, definitely one to watch!

Mental Illness Is Not A Crime

One of my personal favourite performance artists, Claire Fitzpatrick is presenting a deepdive interactive ASMR and body painting experience about mental health. A deeply powerful and dedicated artist, this will be a fascinating experience.

Necklace

I am completely intrigued by this show. Isobel Stankiewicz, has created the first draft of a new work that combines theatre-based practices with community development practices. In doing so, the work seeks to widen critical conversations about our perceptions of disability.

Autis-tricks

Magic shows are the best. In this show, Aaron Ducker plays his hand and reveals he is a high-functioning Austistic. Have a look inside his overactive little mind with his signature, savage, satirical style.

Change

Access Arts are presenting an intriguing performance of an afternoon on May 11. This performance will be played out in a physical and investigative framework while building a spontaneous and intuitive response from participants to create Change.

Nadia Jade

Nadia Jade is a Brisbane-based creative and entrepreneur with a bent for a well-turned phrase and an unerring sense of the zeitgeist. She watches a disproportionate amount of live performance and can usually be found slouching around the various circus warehouses of Brisneyland.
