Five Brissie bops to get you bouncing

I don’t know about you, but I love listening to music. Especially when it’s music produced, written, performed (and sometimes all three) by local Brissy artists. So, I thought I’d compile a list of the latest Brisbane bops I’ve been listening to.

 It Works | Monique Claire

This track is currently number five on the Triple J Unearthed Roots Chart, although by the time this article is published it may even be well above it and it’s honestly no wonder why. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since I first heard it. I may have also changed my Spotify settings to that the song would play on repeat and I have no regrets.

Singer-songwriter/cellist Monique Claire has created an edgy folk-pop track (with the accompaniment of a harp, violin, double bass and drums) with a haunting sound and lyrics that provide a commentary on the narcotic effects advertising. Through her powerful vocals, she takes us on a journey in which we are asked to question the world we are creating and the role we have in it.

It Works is the second single from Monique’s forthcoming debut album.

Cockblocked by Corona | Alex Lamont

For their debut single, this is such a banger. It explores how Covid-19 has destroyed teenage dreams and any hopes of having a successful dating life, even if you both like each other. Whenever I listen to this song, it definitely boosts my mood and makes me jiggle in my seat.

Cherub | Ball Park Music

The lyrics of this song are so poetic, and will  make you feel lots of warm and fuzzy feelings in your chest. It also has left me feeling quite starry eyed quite a number of times. The video is equally as exquisite and will leave you charmed. It’s the third track released of Ball Park Music’s upcoming self-titled album which will drop on the 23rd of October, followed by a week-long sold out residency at the Triffid. If you haven’t heard of Ball Park Music and feel like listening to albums that can make you laugh, cry and everything in between, then they’re the perfect fit for you.

Roll Over | East of Zurich

I heard this song for the first time on a local radio station, which lead to me doing some lurking (as you do) on who the band was, where they are located and I was so ecstatic to find that they were all Brissy boys. There sound has a very 90’s rock vibe and is perfect to jam out to after a long day at the office or in a classroom with small children.

Serial Mind | Little Kitch

This song is such a vibe. It has such a funky baseline and the leader singers voice is so sultry and sounds like what I imagine velvet would like. Serial Mind is in fact the first single by Little Kitch, a duo that hails from our very own sunny coast. They’re planning on dropping their debut EP Foreplay within the remainder of this years, so keep your eyes and ears pealed for that.
