Three Unmissable Acts at Yonder

Following its successful debut in 2019, Yonder Festival is back for another glorious weekend of art, theatre, music, dance and workshops. This year the line-up is rich with fresh independent acts, grown right here in our own backyard. To help you navigate your way through the program, here are three promising performance picks to point your peepers at.

Little Lunch

I’ve found the mention of school PE class to grown adults elicits mixed responses. Some recall the thrill of brushing up against their crush during a particularly vigorous game of basketball, while others, like me, recall the unending anxiety of being picked last. Fear not, last-picked comrades, as Little Lunch has something for everyone. Little Lunch is an interactive roving experience where all are welcome to come and play classics such as Stuck in the Mud and Red Rover. Led by a squad of dorky 80s-style PE teachers, Little Lunch is sure to be a hit.

Church of Latter-Day Hams

After summoning a glittery satan and nearly bringing about the apocalypse at Yonder in 2019, the Church of Latter-Day Hams is back to finish the job. Picture those pesky mormons at your door, clad in starched-white shirts and black ties, except this time they are inviting you to knock on their door and hear about the good word of Satan. Church of Latter-Day Hams looks fun, clever and cathartic for those raised in christian households, offering an opportunity to laugh at the absurdity of the rituals and rules of religion. To top it all off, they are inclusive, claiming to be “the only Church dedicated to Satan to offer vegan and gluten-free options for blood rituals”.

Theatre of Thunder

Theatre of Thunder are tearing a rift in the land of the living, a portal to a dark underworld of science fiction, ghosts and members of the french court. This year their offering is a delectable fusion of butoh dance, deep thrumming bass and atmospheric sculpture. Renowned for their hypnotic atmospheres and visually stunning costuming, Theatre of Thunder is an experience that should not be missed.

Lauren Hale

Lauren Hale is a Brisbane-based performer, maker, and professional silly billy. She has written, directed, and performed in countless shows and trains regularly with Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Company.

Lauren illustrates and co-publishes a short story zine called GULP! Fiction aimed at supporting local genre writers. She believes that Brisbane is a juicy peach of weird and wonderful artists and will do everything she can to convince you to taste it.
