Who doesn't want to see a play about wizards and music in a village somewhere?

Meet Adam Hasa and Jordan Schulte, long-term collaborators and the writers and directors of The Play about Wizards and Music in a Village Somewhere.

Tell us about the show in 100 words or less

It's our take on the medieval fantasy genre – rather than focus on the princes and kings who go through a tremendous action-packed journey and touching character arc and all of their loves and losses, what about the people in the background, the people who just live non-adventurous lives in the village? The town baker has probably got some stories to tell. The two protagonists aren't even old proper wizards yet, they're teenagers who are wizard apprentices. It's the story that the non-playable characters never get to tell.

Anywhere Festival takes place anywhere but a theatre. Tell us about your venue. What is it about your space that adds to your audience experience?

Not gonna lie, the portraits of the distinguished gentleman on the wall certainly add a nice historical touch. But also the curvature of the senate room seating is sort of reminiscent of those medieval themed family dinner theatre restaurants.

What is your creative process like?

Lots of sitting on a verandah and discussing ideas before the first draft is written. After multiple re-writes, cuts and then finally getting to rehearsals, I swear about 10 more pages are added due to the cast improvising additional jokes. Every rehearsal will always result in all of us doubled over laughing at some point.

Tell us your origin story. How did your company start?

We were both young shire horse breeders who were down on their luck on the local horse scene, and met and bonded in our shared disappointment with where the industry was headed. We eventually started writing plays.

Who is your perfect audience member? Who is going to LOVE this event?

Anyone who loves a good parody, with a twist of the weird, surreal stuff. If you're into DnD or any other medieval kinda stuff you'll appreciate our efforts to reference these/take the piss.

Is there anything else we simply MUST know about the show?

We're lucky to have some of the funniest talent from the Brisbane acting scene in the show. Also there's a character named “Grandma Chicken” who is literally a chicken who is the grandmother of one of the wizards and it's never explained why she is a chicken in the first place. #matildawardworthy
