Comedy Course Showcase, June 2021 | The Humour Experiment

As MC Dorothy May (founder of The Humour Experiment) said in her welcome address, tonight was all about stand-up tragedy and boy did the performers deliver. From toilet analogies to discussions to the social lubricant of alcohol to bad santa stories, there was no waiting at the door for the jokes at the Humour Experiment’s Comedy Course Showcase.

The first emerging comedian that took to the stage was Ipswich grown Brandon Rashad who spoke about the world problem that is the social lubricant of alcohol and how we as humans, struggle to stay dry. With that in mind, I’m not sure how much the audience remembered of that analogy as we were already quite lubed up….

Amanda Maguire shared us another insight, not into alcohol addiction, but this time into weddings and frozen butterflies. You had to be there. Up next was Cody Meng who was the stand-out stand- up who took the crowd on a journey through his deep-seated hatred and associated childhood trauma of playing Ozkick with his mates on the school oval. We hung onto our seats with all of the tension in the air when Cody’s hatred metamorphosed into a brilliant business idea of professional wrestling for little kids. Which somehow ended up discussing kids love of band aids and more toilet analogies. A surreal roller coaster ride for sure.

Up next was Robert Hislap sang us a song. Finally, actor turned comedian (out of our spite) Georgia Struckel burned the house down with the final act about sexual intercourse, the invention of lifelike vibrators, sexy elves and absurd body bag experiences.

Dorothy May and The Humour Experiment have created a supportive platform in which to foster the comedians of the future. Whilst some of the students still need time to finesse and refine their jokes, as is expected, I want to applaud all of them for their courage for standing up in front of a crowd and seeming to appear unnerved by the sea of unknown faces in the crowd. I’m very excited to see what these comedians do next.
