Eucalyptus – The Opera might be about the everyday of a small town, full of small people but their grandiose experience of that mundanity is portrayed to dazzling effect here. Evocative, haunting, and distinctly Australian, this work is one I hope to see do very well and thus usher in a new wave of Australiana at the opera.
The Bluff | The Drawer Productions
The Bluff is an Australian Gothic play that utilises all of the tropes of the genre to full effect to explore the impacts of a tragic event on a small community, the burden of guilt and shame, the effects of gossip and rumour and the very question of our own existence. There are marshlands, apparitions, isolation, guilt and so, so many secrets; all the good gothic stuff. And this is all finely balanced by enough light moments that we don’t get sucked into complete maudlin Wuthering Heights territory.
Portraits: A Haunted Mansion | Observatory Theatre
The play follows the Godbold family as they adapt to rapid changes in their family hierarchy after their father, Ivan (played by James Hogan), suffers from a stroke. Estranged siblings, Josephine (played by Rebecca Day) and Martin (played by Emile Regano), are forced back together to confront unspoken traditions, secrets, memories, trauma, and ghosts.
Flat Out Like A Lizard | Robert the Cat presents the play by Norman Price
Flat Out Like a Lizard is a play that will have you feeling, though you have to spend some time untangling what it is that you are feeling and why. Presented by Metro Arts and Robert the Cat, it is a confronting piece of theatre that is minimalist in its execution and leaves nothing in the way of performer connecting straight to audience.
