Tyrone and Lesley in a Spot | David Megarrity & Nathan Sibthorpe
A co-production with Metro Arts and Brisbane Festival, David Megarrity and Nathan Sibthorpe’s Tyrone and Lesley In A Spot is a ukulele-led dance of screen and song that transports you on a whimsical journey of small discoveries through laughter.
Featuring Megarrity as the writer, composer, performer and on ukulele, alongside Samuel Vincent as the composer, performer and on double bass, who create such unique, approachable characters that wecan’t help but fall in love with.
From the start of the performance, the audience is fully engaged, tapping their feet and swaying to the music in their seats. The musicality of the show is divine, and the use of the double bass made me wonder sometimes whether I was in the BrisbaneJazz Club as it was so bluesy and funky. The duo’s original songs are what Iimagine the kids these days would call ‘bops’ and play in your head on repeats. The lyrics are easy to follow and you can’t help singing (and grinning) along with the characters from your seats. I can assure you that now that I’ve been exposed to the Moth Song, the next time I see one near my bedroom light I may even feel empathetic and not run down the stairs looking for a fly swatter or a vacuum cleaner.
And the show featured, you may have guessed it already, lots of spots. Big ones, small ones. Bright ones, not so bright ones. Even, interactive ones. As an audience member, I couldn’t help getting lost in the intermedial space between the projector (on which Sibthorpe creating stunning, interactive audio-visuals) and the performers and wondering what it is that ties these two elements together. Although Tyrone claims that the show lacks a storyline, I would actually tend to disagree. I think the story, albeit ridiculously funny, is about these two, long-time friends, who are continually looking for their spot; which could be their dreams, their desires, their friendship, their metaphoric light...
This show isn’t meant to make you think, it’s meant to make you laugh and leave your everyday stresses at the door. It’s funny and it’s light. You’ll like it.
